ByteLingual is built around passive learning — it works quietly in the background. Our approach to your data follows the same principle: we collect only what we need, we never sell it, and we never use it for advertising.

Who we are

ByteLingual is an iOS language learning app. References to "we", "us", or "our" in this policy refer to ByteLingual. You can reach us at the contact details at the bottom of this page.

What data we collect

We collect data through four channels:

1. Analytics (PostHog)
When you use the ByteLingual app, we collect anonymised usage events to understand how the app is being used. This includes things like which collections you activate, how often you open the app, and whether you add a widget to your home or lock screen. This data is tied to a randomly generated device identifier — not your name, email address, or Apple ID. We use PostHog (EU servers, posthog.com) to process this data.

Session replay. As part of our PostHog analytics, we use session replay to record how you move through the app's screens, so we can spot confusing flows and fix usability problems. Before any recording leaves your device, we automatically mask everything you type, all images, and secure system screens such as the Apple payment sheet, and we hide the screens where you create and manage your own custom collections. Because a replay is a recording of what is on screen, content shown on general screens — for example the current word on the live card — may still appear in a recording. Recordings are tied to the same randomly generated device identifier, not your name, email, or Apple ID, and are stored on PostHog's EU servers. We can turn session replay off remotely, and you can ask us to stop recording your sessions or delete existing recordings at any time (see Your rights below).

2. Email address (bytelingual.com website only)
If you submit your email address through any form on our website, we store it in a private mailing list. We use this only to contact you about ByteLingual — updates, new features, and launch news. We do not share this with third parties or use it for any other purpose. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

3. Subscription management (RevenueCat)
If you purchase a ByteLingual subscription, your in-app purchase is processed by Apple. We use RevenueCat (revenuecat.com) to manage subscription status and entitlements on our behalf. RevenueCat receives your App Store receipt data, a randomly generated device identifier, and metadata such as app version, OS version, and country or region. This data is used solely to verify and manage your subscription — it is not used for advertising or sold to third parties. RevenueCat's servers are based in the United States; data transfers from the UK and EEA are covered by Standard Contractual Clauses. You can review RevenueCat's privacy policy at revenuecat.com/privacy.

4. Apple analytics
If you have opted in to sharing analytics with developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may share aggregated, anonymised data about your usage with us through App Store Connect. We have no control over this data collection — it is governed by Apple's privacy policy.

What we do not collect

Where your data is stored

Analytics data and session replay recordings collected via PostHog are stored on PostHog's EU-based servers in Frankfurt, Germany, in compliance with GDPR. Email addresses collected via the website are stored with our email provider under their own privacy terms. Subscription and receipt data is processed by RevenueCat on servers based in the United States, under Standard Contractual Clauses for UK and EEA transfers. All language pairs, collections, and settings you create or change within the app are stored locally on your device and are never transmitted to us.

Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

For users in the UK and European Economic Area, our legal basis for processing analytics data is legitimate interests — specifically, our interest in understanding how the app is used so we can improve it. Our legal basis for processing email addresses is consent — you provided your email voluntarily. You can withdraw consent at any time by contacting us.

Your rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the right to:

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details below. For UK users, the relevant authority is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Children's privacy

ByteLingual does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The analytics data we collect is anonymised and not linked to any individual identity. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
